German Pancakes was one of my favorite breakfasts growing up, and I’ve loved watching it become one of my kids’ favorite breakfasts now. They love how the german pancakes puff up in the pan while they cook in the oven.
Top them with powdered sugar and syrup and they’re to die for!
If these are new to you (as they were to my husband, Jeff), make them! Make them NOW! You wont regret it. 🙂
What are German Pancakes?
German pancakes, often called Dutch Baby pancakes are baked pancakes made from eggs, milk, flour and vanilla. The pancakes are baked in a metal or cast iron pan, puff up in the oven and then fall as they cool.
How to make German Pancakes:
- Add 5 tablespoons of butter to a 9×13 inch baking and place it in your preheating oven to melt.
- Meanwhile, add the eggs, milk, flour, salt and vanilla to a blender; cover and blend until smooth. Pour batter into the baking dish, over the melted butter.
3. Bake until the edges are golden brown and puffy, about 22-27 minutes.
4. Serve warm, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and syrup.

I make them all the time, at least once a week. But I use 2 round cake pans and I put butter, powdered sugar and fresh lemon juice. I also make them with bacon, onion and cheese. They are also delicious.
I have made this several times now and love it every single time. I have never tried it with syrup though…the first time I made it I sprinkled it with powdered sugar and topped it with lemon juice, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries. I realized that the berries were a bit too flavorful and took away from the experience if eating the pancake. So I recommend just having this with powdered sugar and lemon juice squeezed on top. For whatever reason this combination is just phenomenal 😍!
Can these be frozen then reheated?
This is thee ONLY German pancake recipe I allow in my kitchen. My family calls it Dutch monkey and it’s a hit everytime I make it!!!
Yes I did try it, I didn’t have any milk so I used 1 cup of whipping cream, very good would make it again
Love this recipe, very easy to make. I heated up a little homemade apple pie filling and used that as a topping, with a little powdered sugar sprinkled over the whole thing. Tasted great!
